LanguageMate® Partners With Presbyterian Senior Living to Enhance Service Plan Adherence

NEW YORK, New York (November 14, 2011) – LanguageMate® is excited to announce a partnership with Presbyterian Senior Living to advance the use of Interactive Voice Response (IVR) technology in senior living facilities. Through this partnership, Language Mate® and Presbyterian Senior Living will collaborate to evaluate a health communication platform called Messenger. The 12-month beta-pilot, funded by Enterprise Community Partners, will test the effectiveness of Messenger in improving resident’s health by enhanced adherence to a service plan developed with the resident to manage chronic health issues without increasing hours worked by service coordinators at the site.

Messenger is a web-based communication platform for patient outreach that enables healthcare workers to create, disseminate, and manage patient-oriented telephone messages. The messages are designed to impart culturally and linguistically appropriate health information, promote chronic disease self-management and provide appointment and medication reminders.

“LanguageMate®’s partnership with Presbyterian Senior Living provides a unique opportunity to expand the use of health-enhancing technology to the older adult population,” said Amie Parikh, Director of Research and Partnership Development, LanguageMate®. “This beta evaluation is an important step for both organizations to streamline the outreach process so that health workers can spend more time with the residents they serve.”

“Presbyterian Senior Living is thrilled to work with LanguageMate® to explore the role of technology in helping residents age in place,” said Diane Burfeindt, Vice President of Operations/Residential and Community Services, Presbyterian Senior Living. “This partnership will provide additional support for our outreach staff in their efforts to help residents improve their health and meet their disease management goals.”

If your organization is interested in becoming a beta partner, please contact Amie Parikh (aparikh@languagemate.com) or Michael Krupnick (mkrupnick@languagemate.com).

KU Medical Center Implements Canopy® to Better Serve Local Hispanic Population

On July 7, LanguageMate® deployed Canopy® Medical Spanish at the University of Kansas Medical Center (KUMC). The innovative e-learning program, developed with funding from the National Institutes of Health, is designed to enable current and future medical professionals to communicate more effectively with Spanish-speaking patients.

With an increasingly high Spanish-speaking patient population in the greater Kansas City area, and the need to accommodate more students per course, KUMC needed a turnkey solution that was not only affordable, but also accessible. Students and staff members alike will have access to the institution-wide license.

Patricia A. Thomas, MD, KUMC’s Associate Dean for Cultural Enhancement and Diversity, anticipates positive results from the course. “It will allow wide-spread access to students, faculty and staff on all of our campuses to have the opportunity to learn medical Spanish at their own pace and on their own time,” Thomas said.

In addition to providing a flexible option for learning medical Spanish, Canopy® provides busy students with in-depth personalized feedback and a robust set of exercises. LanguageMate® Director of Product Management, Brian Yarnell, speaks to the benefits of the Canopy® platform relative to KUMC’s needs, stating, “The administration wanted a course that could accommodate more students, offer more material, and be easier on the students’ schedules. Through the bite-size chunks of on-demand lessons, Canopy® was the solution for both students and faculty at the institution.”
