Our History

Founded in 2002, LanguageMate works closely with provider and patient communities to develop tools that eliminate barriers to efficient, equitable delivery of high-quality healthcare.

Eager, but helpless patients; capable, but overtaxed providers; well-intentioned, but frustrated administrators - these are some of the sobering observations that punctuate the many encounters Bill Z. Tan has had over the years while accompanying his family members on medical visits.

Why does a healthcare system blessed with so many scientific advances and remarkably talented personnel suffer such pervasive operational challenges and fiscal difficulties? What if there are better tools to inform patients and equip providers for the work they do? How can such tools improve the quality of care for my family and countless other patients, bringing positive change to the system as a whole?

These questions compelled the LanguageMate founder to search for solutions to address the persistent challenges he has witnessed in healthcare delivery. Looking into various methods of care provision, Bill realized that, though much innovation has occurred in the development of better health diagnostics and therapeutics, there was a near complete absence of technology-enabled innovations addressing process obstacles in medical, public health, and social service settings. Thus, the vision for LanguageMate was born, and Bill made a life-long commitment to the cause.

The company was soon joined by individuals with expertise in healthcare practice and administration, cross-cultural communication, and information technology, all of whom driven by the same ambition: to develop innovative solutions to improve the process of care delivery. Our work is further supported by a growing number of clinicians, researchers, advocates, and other informed individuals who share our commitment to creating change. The vision pioneered by this emergent LanguageMate community - to empower people with tools that facilitate effective communication and, in turn, process improvement - has since been corroborated by leading academic and research partners and embraced by institutions that are on the frontline of care delivery.

Since 2004, our work has been recognized by the National Institutes of Health (NIH) with over a dozen Small Business Innovation Research awards totaling over $20 million. These awards have enabled us to generate a growing body of evidence to scientifically validate the efficacy, adoptability, and long-term sustainability of our products. As a leader in process innovation for the healthcare community, LanguageMate has created an unrivaled portfolio of clinical tools and education programs that contribute to advancing the quality and efficiency of care delivery for the diverse communities they serve. We look forward to continuing our collaboration with our many partners, users, and supporters to bring mission-critical innovation to the healthcare industry and beyond.
